Writer/Editor (Bilingual Preferred) Overview  The Writer/Editor serves in the Office of Communications and Public Information, reports to the Editorial Communications Manager, and is responsible for drafting, copyediting and proofreading communications content. Ideally, the candidate also translates and transcreates material between English and Spanish, Amharic or Arabic. The Opportunity 
  • Researches, drafts and copyedits a variety of written and multimedia content;
  • Assists with multiplatform delivery of information about City programs, projects, events, initiatives, services and issues to Alexandria residents, businesses, visitors, employees and news media representatives;
  • Proofreads materials to ensure accuracy, correct grammar and spelling, and adherence to Associated Press and City style guidelines;
  • Ideally, translates and adapts content between English and Spanish, Amharic or Arabic while maintaining a culturally competent tone, intent, and style; and provides occasional live interpretation between English and Spanish, Amharic or Arabic; and
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate  To qualify for this position, an applicant must have a bachelor's degree in journalism, English, marketing, communications, or a closely related field; three (3) years of experience in a related communications role; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Bilingual duties are preferred, but not required. To be considered an ideal candidate, an applicant should also have earned a bachelor’s degree; have extensive experience in the duties listed in this posting; be fluent in written and spoken Spanish, Amharic or Arabic; and have certifications or similar training and evaluation related to drafting, copyediting, proofreading, translation, transcreation, and interpretation.
