Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates operating health centers across the U.S. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit membership organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education. Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and Planned Parenthood Votes seeks a Director for State Advocacy Communications. This job reports to the Senior Director of Advocacy Communications in the Communications Department of PPFA. The Communications Department is part of the Communications and Culture Division. Purpose: The Director of State Advocacy Communications is responsible for ensuring the successful development and implementation of earned media strategies in support of PPFA’s and the Planned Parenthood affiliates’ state advocacy, litigation, and electoral goals. The director manages the full state advocacy communications team [consisting of an Associate Director, a Communications Manager, and a Press Officer] and is the chief point of contact for affiliates’ state advocacy needs. The Director is also a senior leader and communications strategist for the National Office’s electoral efforts. Delivery: ●Create and drive earned media, communications strategies, and a cohesive narrative to advance Planned Parenthood’s state policy, litigation, and electoral goals. Oversee earned media output in support of successful policy and advocacy campaigns, including state-based legislation and litigation.
●Lead electoral communications work for high-level national and state campaigns for Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Votes.
●Contribute to broader strategies and direction of the Communications Division and support the successful execution of communications campaigns and initiatives as a member of the management team within Communications.
●Build a broader network of communications support across the federation for affiliates; Must respond in a timely manner to affiliate requests and support affiliates as needed. This includes but is not limited to leading media trainings, providing high-level crisis support on state fights, collaborating on national media requests, and supporting communications strategy and media rollouts.
●Serve as on-the-record spokesperson for PPFA, PPAF, and PPV.
●Edit and write a large volume of press releases, statements, op-eds, talking points, campaign plans, and briefing memos, under tight deadlines and while juggling a large volume of other work. Review and edit other materials to ensure that they reflect communications strategies and messaging.
●Oversee the creation of toolkits, templates, materials, and other media that can be helpful for Planned Parenthood affiliates in outreach to media. Engagement: The Director will work closely with National Office Staff and Planned Parenthood affiliates and advocacy organizations to advance a shared agenda.
●Reporting to the Senior Director of Advocacy Communications, this position manages a team consisting of an Associate Director, a Communications Manager, and a Press Officer who drive local and regional media in support of the affiliates' and federation's objectives, as well as national media on Planned Parenthood affiliates and in-state policy, litigation, and electoral fights.
●Ability to work with and manage up and across multiple departments and teams (e.g., Litigation and Law, Organizing and Electoral Campaigns, Digital Campaigns, State Policy) collaboratively to accomplish desired goals.
●Cultivate and deepen relationships with key reporters, surrogates, and coalition partners working in reproductive health and cross-movement issues.
●Serve as a senior leader in the state fights steering committee and ballot initiative steering committee.
●Serve as a senior member of PPAF and PP Votes’ electoral teams. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): ●Seven or more years of experience in communications or earned media, with preference given to candidates with experience in health care, reproductive health and rights, electoral politics, or issue advocacy.
●Excellent management skills — the ability to manage a team of direct reports and manage the leadership of affiliates across the country.
●Ability to work effectively and nimbly within a large organization and build consensus with colleagues who are not directly accountable to you. Must be able to work effectively with leaders from associated affiliates.
●Ability to drive short- and long-term objectives through an onslaught of brand and policy threats at the local, state, and federal levels.
●Ability to serve as on-the-record spokesperson; ability to train affiliate leaders to serve in the same roles.
●Proven ability to run multiple earned media campaigns across local and national press while understanding deep regional media differences and sensitivity.
●Extremely sharp, proven, and battle-tested instincts for communications and public relations.
●Superb writing and editing skills, project management, and leadership skills.
