Assistant Director of Communications & News, D.C. Area

Reporting to the Director of Media Relations and D.C. Area Communications, the Assistant Director will play a critical role in managing the editorial content and processes across the region; and promoting reputational awareness of D.C. area programs, research, and faculty experts in support of university priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In partnership with the Director, the Assistant Director manages and evaluates the region’s content strategy and workflow, ensures alignment and coordination between written/visual storytelling
This individual regularly writes stories and related content for the university’s news platforms, VT News, and collaborate with colleges and units across the university, and will track/report stories’ reach and effectiveness
The Assistant Director will serve as a liaison in the D.C. area to the Media Relations team in communications and marketing, collaborating frequently with communicators across campus to position/pitch stories, research, and faculty experts
This position will prepare and coordinate tip sheets, media advisories, and news stories
This position will align messaging with social media, marketing, visual strategy, and campus wide strategic communications planning to raise awareness of VT in the D.C. metro area and connect the regional, Blacksburg and Roanoke presence
