President’s Note: September

What does #WomanUp mean to you? For WWPR, it recently meant celebrating several outstanding young women professionals at the Emerging Leaders Awards! We honored their contributions to the field of public relations and communications in the DC area. Check out this video

Throughout this year, we’ve been exploring the theme of #WomanUp. For us, this means to be bold courageous, and resilient enough to persevere through even the most difficult challenges in work and life. We’ve been engaging industry leaders, WWPR members, and others about what it means to them.

Let me share a little about what #WomanUp means to me:

  • Bold means having the ability to be different or think differently while maintaining your confidence.
  • Courageous refers to the ability to take risks and act despite fears or uncertainty.
  • And being resilient is the ability to keep going on despite resistance, difficulties, or failure.
  • Having the capacity to #WomanUp doesn’t mean setbacks or frustrations don’t happen–it means enduring, learning, and continuously growing through professional and personal experiences.

All the nominees for the Emerging Leaders Awards embody these qualities and more. It’s a great pleasure to recognize such accomplished women!

Coming up in November, we continue our theme of #WomanUp by honoring women who are reaching the pinnacle of the communications profession at the Woman of the Year Awards Luncheon.

Special thanks to our co-chairs Sabrina Pringle and Sara Tuman for planning such a fantastic event, along with task force leader and moderator Lauren Lawson-Zilai, and keynote speaker Blayne Alexander. It takes a talented group of dedicated volunteers to make a spectacular celebration possible!

We hope to see you soon at another fun event on October 5 for “Fashion’s Night Out: Sip and Shop Presented by CRAFT and SuiStudio.” Explore SuiStudio’s tailored suits, along with cocktails and networking. Meet WWPR board members and learn about the value of membership. Non-members will receive a 20% off promo code to join WWPR!

And coming up on October 26 is one of our most popular events—the Annual Media Roundtable. Don’t miss out as we usually sell out this lunch event!

Best,
Kelly

#WomanUpDC for Washington PR Woman of the Year

We’re calling for our community to #WomanUpDC for WWPR’s Woman of the Year (WOY) award: to recognize woman who are bold, courageous and resilient enough to persevere through even the most difficult challenges in both work and life – and nominate them!

Throughout the years, the WOY award has honored individuals who have displayed true leadership throughout her career – both in public relations and the community – and shown their devotion to the advancement of fellow women. Our winners have held top positions in government, agencies, and Fortune 500 companies; led nonprofit boards; been active in mentoring other women; and given their whole hearts to variety of causes.

Two of our past honorees recently shared what the WOY award meant to them and why they think it’s important in our community:

“After 25 years in communications and market research, it was a thrill to be recognized by my peers for contributions to the field. Being named WWPR’s Woman of the Year 2015 was especially gratifying because I have built most of my career in Washington, among so many strong, talented women and men in the industry.”

Christina Nicols, Senior Vice President, Director of Strategic Planning and Research, Hager Sharp

“The award is a reflection of the wonderful work that many women in our community execute on a daily basis at work and in the community. It was such an honor to be selected as the Woman of the Year for 2014 and I’m proud of  WWPR for acknowledging the accomplishments of so many like us.”

– Laura Monica, Vice President for Pepco Holdings Inc.

This year it’s more important than ever to credit and highlight the women in D.C. who have made a major impact on our lives and others. #WomanUpDC and join us in celebration on November 17th.

President’s Note: August

Time flies! Not only are we more than half way through the year, I’ve discovered that I’m in my sixth year of membership with WWPR.

I remember my first event, a professional development brown bag panel during lunch, and anxiously entering a room where I didn’t know anyone. In a blink someone greeted me and I quickly found myself in conversation, followed by an interesting panel discussion. Not only did I leave invigorated by new insights about the communications profession, I had made my first WWPR friends.

During my first couple years as a WWPR member, I really enjoyed the networking and professional development events. Everyone was so friendly and supportive—it was a culture that really made me feel welcome.

But it wasn’t until I started volunteering for WWPR (on the professional development committee) that I felt the most reward for my involvement. Every month I met new people, learned from speakers, and brought information back to my work. I not only found solutions to communications problems I encountered on the job, but also new tools and resources for making my work easier.

As I grew in my involvement with WWPR, I also grew in my career. I met people who helped me and also had the pleasure of being able to help others. While I have given my time and energy to this organization, I have reaped the benefits of engagement ten-fold.

So if you are at a crossroads in your career or just feeling stuck, consider volunteering your time and raising your involvement. It may seem counterintuitive to give more of yourself in order to receive help. But I have found the more I give to a group of people I care about, the more I receive in growth and support.

We look forward to seeing you at upcoming WWPR events, like the Emerging Leaders Awards on September 12! And we hope that you will nominate an industry leader for the Woman of the Year award coming later this fall. It’s a great pleasure to celebrate some of our fantastic women communications leaders in DC!

Best,

Kelly-Mack-US-Department-Health-Human-Services-2
